Removal of cement repairs from a 500+ year old wall in Lewes

If a lime mortar structure is re-pointed or rendered with cement it can become static and does not allow the original structure to breath or shift slightly over time. Very often cement repairs can cause original lime mortar to turn to dust.

Cement does not bond well with lime mortar – it tends to create a wedge and is almost a separate entity within the wall. Unfortunately, cement is still wrongly applied to historic structures in many cases.
