From insurance claims, such as if a vehicle has crashed into a wall, or removing foliage such as ivy that can push a wall apart, to the most common damage which occurs when cement has been used to repair a lime mortar structure, Flint-tec has all the skills and expertise necessary to rebuild or repair in these and many other situations.
This was a particularly tricky build to replicate our clients wishes to lay the flint in “Drunken Sailors” appearance, where the wall had been damaged by a vehicle.
It is possible to remove large sections of loose or crumbling flint wall without causing damage to sound areas. Then the affected area is rebuilt solidly and sufficiently. We always strive to create a good match between old and new structures or parts of, using traditional materials and methods.
Walls built with lime absorb water and dry again naturally. When cement is used as a repair water can be trapped within the wall, then in cold or freezing conditions the moisture will expand and push sections of wall out creating cracks and general damage.
Cement, to my mind looks ugly when applied to lime mortar structures. Granted it is a very useful material when used in the right way for some conservation works, but it can cause many problems when applied in the wrong way.
Repairs may involve removing loose or blown sections of wall – Helibar or ‘stitching ‘ can be a good repair method in some cases.
